Radon Measurement for Multi-Family, Large Buildings & Schools

Different buildings, different rules

Radon rules for a single-family home are very different from those for multi-family buildings, large buildings and schools. Patten Inspections LLC is licensed by the New Jersey DEP to carry out radon measurement in all of these, not only in houses.

Radon is a radioactive gas with no smell and no color, and it is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. In a building where many people live, work or learn, a well-planned test is the only way to know where levels are high.

Why larger buildings are tested differently

In a house, one or two test locations on the lowest lived-in level usually tell the story. In a multi-family building, a school or a large commercial building, radon can vary widely from one unit or room to the next, so the test has to cover many more locations.

Planning the test

Before testing, Grant will ask about the building: how many floors and units it has, which rooms are in contact with the ground and how the spaces are used. That decides how many test devices are needed and where they go, and the quote is based on it.
